About the Opportunity

Due to continued growth, Optimum Air are looking for a Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Trainee Technician to join their growing team.

Your duties will involve working with the team who maintain HVAC plant and equipment at various locations for customers.

Essential to this role is a good mechanical understanding and excellent written and verbal communication skills.

Day to day requirements are:

  • You will undertake a range of tasks suited to your level of training and development
  • Assist with maintaining customers’ installations of air conditioning, mechanical, electrical and control plant
  • To assist tradesperson with responding to service calls and complete quoted work as directed by the Service Centre.
  • Attend training institute and complete apprenticeship course work on time and to a high standard
  • Follow health and safety procedures
  • Comply with company policies and procedures
  • Maintain good working relationships with customers, work colleagues and company officers

 About You



You will be a great team player, keen to fit into a team within a fantastic company culture. A pre-trade qualification will be an advantage (but not essential).

Hours will be discussed with you at interview stage with Optimum Air. Te Tohu  The teams’ usual hours of work are 8am to 4.30pm and there is a requirement to be available to work some overtime.

New Zealand Certificate in Refrigeration and Air Conditioning (Trade)(Level 4)

Graduates of this qualification will be able to:

  • Plan, troubleshoot, recondition, and test when maintaining and servicing a range of RAC plant and equipment.
  • Apply engineering trade skills and knowledge to plan, install, and test a range of RAC equipment in accordance with industry and statutory standards. - Commission basic installations, and work with specialists to commission a full range of complex RAC plant and equipment.
  • Apply knowledge of RAC system design and applications to daily tasks, and to meet job and organisation requirements.
  • Apply knowledge of the use and management of refrigerants in the RAC industry to safely meet all relevant environmental, legislation, and regulation requirements, when recovering refrigerant into a cylinder, or charging a refrigeration system.
  • Carry out electrical work associated with the installation, maintenance, servicing and commissioning of refrigeration plant and equipment.
  • Apply knowledge of the relevant Health and Safety legislation and workplace safety culture to work safely and responsibly in a commercial environment.
  • Self-manage on-going learning, and maintain the professional standards required for the RAC industry.
