About the Opportunity

Mō Te Huarahi  

We are seeking candidates for Timber Machining Apprenticeships to join the TUMU Timbers production team. In this role you will be assisting with the production of remanufactured timber products by setting, operating, and maintaining planers, band saws and other machinery.

About You


You will need to:

  • Be resilient, self-motivated with a ‘can do’ attitude
  • Be physically fit as manual handling will be required
  • Be good at communicating with a range of people
  • Show mechanical aptitude
  • Have excellent attention to detail
  • Be willing to work either Day or Night shifts
  • NCEA Level 2 in English and Maths
  • Restricted Driver's Licence 


Ngā Hāora  

Hours and shifts will be discussed with you at interview stage with Tumu Timbers. In general, their operation runs a day and nightshift from Monday to Friday:

Dayshift:             5.00am – 3.30pm

Nightshift:          3.30pm – 2.00am (nightshift allowance applies)

Weekend hours are also available (weekend allowance applies).


Te Tohu  

New Zealand Certificate in Timber Machining (Level 4) - 

Graduates of this qualification will be able to:

  • Apply knowledge of mechanical engineering systems to a solid wood manufacturing operation.
  • Manufacture, grind and hone cutters in a timber machining operation.
  • Design profile cutter templates in preparation for profile grinding operations.
  • Develop profile, and grind and hone profile cutters in-head in preparation for machine set-up.
  • Interpret and apply specifications and knowledge to the operations and maintenance of timber machining equipment.
  • Set cutter head spindle positions and joint profile cutters.
  • Set up a timber planer for profile.
  • Maintain timber machining equipment and troubleshoot product defects.
