Toolmakers gain engineering skills and knowledge through practical experience to make moulds, dies, gauges, jigs, tooling, press tooling, and fixtures for industrial processes.
Working on CNC machines in a factory environment your day-to-day tasks could include:
• programming the CNC machine tool with data taken from technical drawings
• working out the most efficient order to carry out machining tasks
• choosing the right tools for each stage
• setting the cutting speeds and tolerance levels operating the machine
• checking the work meets quality and technical standards
• maintaining equipment
As an apprentice, you will work alongside experienced tradesmen to learn skilled task work in the field of toolmaking and operating CNC machines.

The apprenticeship is a 3-4 year contract. In addition to your on-job training, you will have to attend all courses that are part of the apprenticeship and complete all relevant assessments to gain the NZ Certificate in Mechanical Engineering (Trade) (Level 4).
Applicants should have:
• At least NCEA Level 2 including Math
• Analytical thinking skills/Attention to detail
• Willingness to listen and learn
• Positive can-do attitude with a passion for engineering
• Commitment to 3-4 years of study
